{"id":620,"date":"2012-06-07T18:36:24","date_gmt":"2012-06-07T18:36:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/myringetteteam.com\/charity_cup\/?p=620"},"modified":"2012-06-08T01:00:05","modified_gmt":"2012-06-08T01:00:05","slug":"coaching-girls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/myringetteteam.com\/charity_cup\/coaching-girls\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cCoaching Girls\u2026\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The coaching certification course instructor led a discussion on the difference between coaching boys and girls \u2013 males and females.<\/p>\n<p>Hours later, the discussion led to another topic\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Nothing like gender differences to get people talking.<\/p>\n<p>So, are boys and girls different?<\/p>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Journal of Sport Science and Medicine<\/span> published a study The \u201c<em>Views of Adolescent Female Youth on Physical Activity During Early Adolescence<\/em>\u201d that was sponsored by the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Sport Participation Research Initiative<\/span>. It was done in conjunction with the Sudbury Catholic District School Board.<\/p>\n<p>The study offers ringette coaches a window to the female ringette athlete:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For starters, coaches should work hard to understand the female athlete point of view;<\/li>\n<li>Females place great value on how well they perform the activity;<\/li>\n<li>They want to share the experience with friends;<\/li>\n<li>They want to have fun while participating;<\/li>\n<li>They want to feel good about themselves during and after an activity; and<\/li>\n<li>They will be sensitive to peer feedback on self-evaluation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Implications for the hard working and ever diligent ringette coach:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create practices to build confidence and skill at the same time;<\/li>\n<li>Use learning partners on and off the ice, encouraging sharing and dialogue among ringette athletes;<\/li>\n<li>Do partner on-ice drills to encourage interaction, and to teach team play;<\/li>\n<li>Strive for inclusivity, rather than exclusivity \u2013 don\u2019t play favourites;<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t centre someone out in front of the team \u2013 leading to humiliation and embarrassment \u2013 the athlete may not return;<\/li>\n<li>Create socials to discuss team business and to build friendships, team cohesion, and fun;<\/li>\n<li>Create challenges, drills and games of chance to create fun;<\/li>\n<li>Thoughtfully, recognize good performance in front of the group \u2013 players will appreciate the recognition and that they will enjoy supporting the recognition of others.<\/li>\n<li>Celebrate the diversity and uniqueness of the female athlete.
